Our Helambu Project

English / deutsch

Since September, we’ve been living and working in Gangkharka, a village in the Helambu region of Nepal. VEC-Gangkharka (www.vec.org.np) is our host organization, with projects benefiting children in remote mountain communities. With VEC, we’ve organized a series of mobile health clinics, begun setup of a new village health post, and collected footage for a documentary film about the region, its cultures, and its development. It’s proving to be a real challenge, a family adventure!

The people of the region are mostly subsistence farmers, shepherds and laborers. Very few are lucky enough to have much education. To help the children of the region have access to a good education, and maintain a connection with their cultural identities, VEC manages a boarding school for children who have lost parents or were left behind as their parents seek employment overseas.

In Helambu, there is also little access to any quality healthcare. The mobile health clinics VEC provides are a rare chance for many residents to get needed treatments for infections, injuries, skin and digestive diseases, and more. Most can be treated with very simple medicines, which are provided 100% by volunteers like us. We and other volunteers staffed the health camps in November in Gangkharka, Yangri, and Bholgaon villages, to serve hundreds of patients, and will be bringing a dentist and ophthalmologist there in the springtime. A big THANK YOU to those of you who donated money to provide medicines for the camps. We raised nearly 1000 Euros, and this allowed us to care for nearly all of the patients in need.

Now our focus has shifted to meeting the financial needs of the 100+ children urgently needing sponsorship in order to continue their education at the school. Some international NGOs partnered with VEC to fund the initial establishment of the school, but the ongoing costs of salaries for the teachers and food for the students are in danger of going un-met in the coming months. For this reason, we have established a student sponsorship program, allowing individual sponsors to directly guarantee the ongoing education of a student in need.  Individual support makes a huge impact for these children’s futures. The majority of the Gangkharka children have no way to attend school without external support. The fees paid by supporting relatives (equivalent to EUR 70 per year) cover only 1/10 of the actual cost per child. Your help at this point can help us be sure that all the children have a chance to continue their education.

Consider sponsoring the education of a student in need! Here is how it works:

1. Take a look: If you haven’t already, take a careful look through the materials at
www.vec.org.np (especially this page:
http://vecnepal.weebly.com/gangkharka-student-sponsorship.html ), to
gain a good understanding of the philosophy and methods of VEC and the
school, and get to know the students.

2. Contact us: If you’re ready to sponsor, write us a brief email saying so to
vecgangkharka@gmail.com with a cc to
dave.booker@gonewandering.net. It
would be helpful to tell us a bit about your interests in sponsoring a
child: Do you have special wishes for the children at Gangkharka? Have
you sponsored children before?  Is there a particular form of contact
you’d hope to have with them, etc.? Tell us also at which level/time
period you wish to sponsor, or any other help you may wish to offer.

Suggested support levels:

Partial: EUR 36,00 per month.
Living costs: food, clothing, medicines

Full sponsorship: EUR 50,00 per month.
Includes tuition, books of EUR 14,00 per month

Teacher sponsorship: EUR 75,00 per month.
Covers the salary of one teacher.

3. Payment:

In Germany: Contact your bank to set up a monthly Dauerauftrag to Freunde Nepals’ bank account, with the Stichwort ‘VEC-Helambu’), and tell us in your email the details, so we can double-check that it arrives correctly. We send funds VEC via Freunde Nepals as a Germany-wide ‘umbrella’ for our and
other small Nepali NGOs, so that you receive the appropriate annual certificate for tax deductions.

In the U.S. and Canada: Donate online (tax deductable in the U.S.) through our friends at Wide Awake International.

In the U.K.: http://www.helambuproject.org/Site/how_to_donate.html

4. From us, you’ll receive a sponsor’s packet, with:

*  a suggested child to sponsor (one who’s ready this year to correspond and benefit most from the sponsorship relationship);
* audiovisual materials from the child you sponsor.

We’re also setting up a system to enable you to correspond with the
child(ren) as they advance in their education; your ideas here are very
welcome, as we try to tailor the program for sponsors.

Want to make a smaller donation? . One-time donations are also very welcome; 10 or 20 dollars will go a long way! You can use the same links above to donate to VEC’s projects.

Unser Helambu Projekt

vec_fundraising_1
