The final 3 months in Gangkharka
Our final three months in the village of Gangkharka were full, both challenging and exciting. Following is a glimpse into our experience there.
The health post: Our largest contribution to the school at Gangkharka in Nepal was by far Ina’s work as the school nurse; dozens of the students required care, helping them recover from illnesses and injuries throughout the year. We leave the school’s clinic stocked with medicines and a small medical library, and some of the teachers have had basic training in skills they’ll need for ongoing care for the children. Some more short-term nursing volunteers will visit the school this coming year.
Schulklinik: Inas Rolle als Schulkrankenschwester war insgesamt gesehen unser Hauptbeitrag in der Zeit mit VEC (Village Environment Comunity) in Gankharka. Taeglich brauchten viele Schueler medizinische Versorgung. Wir verlassen die Schulklinik mit gefuellten Regalen, einer kleinen Bibliothek, einer Anleitung fuer die Lehrer, was und wie sie die ueblichen Krankheiten behandeln koennen. Auch einige der Lehrer wurden in Hygiene und medizinischer Versorgung ausgebildet. Im Herbst kommt zum Glueck eine weitere medizinische Helferin in die Schule. Da sich die Schule noch in ihrem ersten Schuljahr befand, war ich auch involviert in Planung, organsieren der Strukturen und Konfliktloesungen.

Dental day – Ina also organized a visit by a dentist to Gangkharka, with all the equipment needed to do many badly needed fillings and extractions.
Zahnarzttag: ich habe den Besuch eines Zahnarztteams organisiert, was logistisch nicht so einfach war. Die ganze Ausruestung inklusive eines 70 kg Generators musste innerhalb von 2 Tage ueber holprige Strassen und ueber die Wanderwege zu unserem Dorf (von Traegern) hochgeschleppt werden. 3 Tage lang wurden in Akkordarbeit viele Fuellungen gemacht und Zaehne gezogen.

The students’ nutritional status was also a point of focus for us this year, and we helped improve the diet, by financing weekly inclusion of eggs and lemon in the meals.
Die Ernaehrung der Schueler-innen war ein anderer Schwerpunkt unseres Aufenthaltes, da das Geld in so kleinen Projekten meist nur fuer die Grundernaehrung reicht. Das heisst traditionell in Nepal: ein kleines Fruehstueck und Reis und Linsen mit etwas Gemuese zweimal am Tag. Da wir noch keinen Sponsor gefunden hatten, finanzierten wir die woechentliche Zugabe von Eiern und Zitronen.

Internet access is a long-term goal at the school, and I setup a successful test of a solar-powered system using the mobile phone network. But perhsps our most important work is less tangible, simply our involvement in the long-term planning of the school’s and NGO’s (VEC) development.

For us as a family, it was a time for enjoying the village life. While the Nepali road system is rapidly reaching nearby villages, Gangkharka is several kilometers up a protected valley, reachable only by footpath. This meant for us a quiet surrounding, with little more disturbing than the occassional cow. Our home garden was a source of learning and enjoyment for me and the children, as was berry-picking, cow-feeding, wood-chopping, and baking cookies over the fire. With friends from school, Tim and Lia enjoyed lots of outdoor play, including the building of a play house in a nearby sand pit.
The spring was a time for festivals, too, and we found ourselves often underway to neighboring villages, camera in hand. In Yangri was a mask-dance fest, near Tarkegyang a mountain-top puja (in hail and snow), in Riparma a wedding, and in our own village were three different pujas, complete with teams of monks chanting from holy books for hours each day.
Fuer uns als Familie war es eine Zeit um das ruhige und landschaftlich schoene Dorfleben zu geniessen, waehrend sich das nepalesische Strassenbausystem in dem Jahr weiter unten enorm in das Tal gefressen hat.
Der Fruehling ist in Nepal eine Zeit der Feste und wir waren oft unterwegs zu Nachbardoerfern. In Yangri war ein Maskentanzfest, bei Tarkagang eine Berggipfelpuja (mit Hagel und Schnee), und in Ribama eine Sherpahochzeit. Obwohl in unserem Dorf nur noch 3 Haeuser bewohnt waren tragen alle (ehemaligen) Dorfbewohner die traditionellen Feste gemeinsam aus. Bei uns waren 2 Pujas (buddhistische Zeremonien) mit tagelagem Getrommel und Gemurmel von heiligen Buechern.

We also finally enjoyed a number of visitors, including friends from home in Germany and America and two unexpected tourists who managed the find their way to Gangkharka unguided; that’s not easy! Two newly-made friends (with whom Ina and Tim pony-trekked to Taropati) are Veronica and Christian (www.myindiatrip.com) who are currently driving their VW camper back to Austria via Iran and Turkey! It was sad to finally say goodbye to all our neighbors and Nepali friends, knowing it could be years before we see them again. But it’s time for moving on, on to the next phase for us and our children. Gangkharka will remain close to our hearts for long to come.
Wir haben auch Besuch genossen, von Familie und Freunden aus Deutschland und Amerika. Zwei neue Freunde sind Veronica und Christian (www.myindiatrip.com). Sie sind mit Tim und Ina nach Taropati gewandert und sind jetzt unterwegs mit ihrem VW Camperbus Richtung Oesterreich, durch den Iran und die Tuerkei!
Die letzten Tage in der Schule waren sehr geschaeftig, weil die langersehnte Wandfarbe erst so spaet kam und wir unbedingt helfen wollten die Gemeinschaftsraeume bunt zu gestalten. Am Ende war es traurig, Tschuss zu sagen zu all den Kindern, unseren nepalischen Freunden und Nachbarn. Wir wussten, dass es Jahre dauern kann bevor wir uns wieder sehen. Aber es war Zeit zu gehen in die naechste Phase des Lebens fuer uns und unsere Kinder. Gangkharka wird nah bleiben, nah in unseren Herzen fuer eine lange Zeit.
