The long trip home

Could you imagine that returning to Germany from our village in Nepal could take so long? Three months, 7 cities, 17 villages, 2000 km of roads, 3 airplanes, 2 buses, 16 taxis, 5 rickshawas, 1 train, 1 rental cars, 7 boats, 2 ponies, 1 elephant and 12 hotel rooms. It wasn’t exactly a straight-line trip. [...]

The final 3 months in Gangkharka

Our final three months in the village of Gangkharka were full, both challenging and exciting. Following is a glimpse into our experience there.
The health post: Our largest contribution to the school at Gangkharka in Nepal was by far Ina’s work as the school nurse; dozens of the students required care, helping them recover from illnesses [...]

We’re back!

We made it back to Germany three da<s ago, both sad to see the end of our Nepali dream year, and happy to see friends and family once again.  In the coming days we will post more photos and stories from our travels. In the meantime, you can reach us by mobile phone. We will [...]

Little trips to the snow – Unsere Bergtouren

We can’t live in Nepal without at least once visiting the high mountains. So, Ina and I (Dave) took turns going trekking these past weeks, while the other of us watched after the kids. First up was Ina, with an adventurous trip up our Yangri Khola valley to the Ganja La, a 5,300-meter-high mountain pass [...]

Quick update

A whirlwind visit to kathmandu is a chance to let you all know that we’re OK. Communications from the village have been nearly impossible, which is why you’ve heard so little. The past two months have seen a lot of work at the school, and a bit of exploring, too. With some Freeiburg friends, we [...]

Incredible Hampi … Aufregend!

After our Goa vacation, we made our way back to Nepal via two days in Hampi, a breathtaking landscape of huge boulders and dramatic temple ruins along a holy sleepy South Indian river. It puts Rome to shame! From there, it took us two days to get back to Nepal, with motor-rickshaw, sleeper train, taxis, [...]

A not-so-little vacation in the sun… Ein langer Urlaub in der Sonne von Goa

After a beautiful, but increasingly cold stay in our Nepali village, Gangkharka, it was time for a bit of warm-up. Our winter Christmas/New Year (and beyond) ‘holiday’, planned from long ago, would be a visit to the beaches of Goa on the west coast of India. Six weeks of sand and surf, boat rides to [...]

The work begins

After our October horse-trek through Helambu, we spent two weeks in Kathmandu, organizing the logistics needed to begin our work with VEC in Gangkharka. Here’s the story of what came next.
On the 1st of November, at 5 in the morning, we head back up to the mountains in a rented jeep. The early start, intended [...]

Entdeckungen

Hallo liebe Freunde und Familie
wir sind wieder zurueck in Kathmandu nach unserer 2 Wochen Wanderung
in Helambu. Jetzt geniessern wir wieder warme Duschen und gutes Essen.
Auf unserem Treck  ist alles gut gelaufen und es war sehr schoen,
trotz einiger Regentage. Der Monsun fing dieses Jahr spaet an und ging
dafuer leider etwas laenger. Wir sind dann einfach laenger [...]

The villages – part 2

Our days of rest at Yangri included lots of play with the local kids. Some, we learned, go to school way back up at Gangkharka, others at the ‘local’ school 45 minutes walk away, others across the river and up the hill and hour to the ‘good’ school at Botang, and still others in Kathmandu. [...]
